Gather documentation
Child's birth certificate, immunization records, previous school transcripts (translated to English/French if needed), PR card/work permit, proof of address.
- 3
Visit the welcome/intake centre
Most boards run dedicated newcomer intake centres. They handle assessments, language placement (ESL), and grade placement.

Complete language assessment
If your child's first language isn't English/French, they'll be placed in ELL (English Language Learner) or French immersion programs to support transition.

Pro tips
Public schools are excellent in most provinces — international rankings (PISA) consistently place Canada in the top 10.
French immersion is free and produces bilingual graduates — highly recommended in Ontario, Alberta and BC.
Childcare for under-5s is heavily subsidized (Quebec: $9.10/day; nationwide $10/day plan in progress) but waitlists are long — apply 6–12 months in advance.
FAQs
Is public school really free in Canada?
Yes — K-12 public education is free for PRs and most work-permit holders' children. You only pay for supplies, field trips, and lunch. International student fees apply to children of visitors only.
What's the difference between English and French immersion?
Standard English programs are taught in English with French as a second language. French immersion teaches all subjects in French until grade 3-6, producing fully bilingual graduates. Both are free.
When does the Canadian school year start?
Early September (after Labour Day) to late June. Some provinces start late August. You can enrol mid-year — schools accommodate newcomers year-round.
